This trial looked at the link from  red meat, processed meat, and poultry consumption with the risk of early death. 448,568 men and women without prevalent cancer, stroke, or MI were included.

These study showed that a high consumption of  processed and red meat only was related to a higher risk of death from any cause and it was estimated that 3.3% of all deaths could be prevented if participants ate less than 20 grams a day of processed meat.

The dark force in one European study proved to be processed meat, which may contain more saturated fat, salt, preservatives and other factors conducive to growing more sludge in our arteries than unadulterated red meat. Not that we need a study for this, common says (a great naturopathic philosophy says just eat whole food to keep healthy!)

Processed meat intake was also significantly associated with cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and ‘other causes of death’.
It looks like unprocessed/organic chicken is still on the menu – Phew!

The other study takes a look at  l-carnitine, which is abundant in red meat and actually advocated as a health supplement, is metabolised by gut flora to harmful products relevant to the development in Atherosclerosis. The take home message in this one was keep your bowel microflora healthy and eat small amounts of red meat only. Again, the studies prove what great naturopathic advice we give!
