Rickets which is a weakening of bone structure is an example of severe D deficiency, however we test and find Vitamin D deficiency in my patients who have problems with their immune system, infections and colds, fatigue, headaches, a history of cancer, low mood, poor sleep and the list goes on.
Vit D when not at optimal levels is extremely effective as a treatment for acute colds and influenza as well as building up the immune system.
A Harvard medical study found that one in 5 American children have vitamin D levels less than the optimal level for good health. Studies closer to home demonstrate that 80% of New Zealanders maybe at risk of deficiency. Good evidence exists that many breastfed infants not supplemented with Vitamin D during the first 6 months of life will be deficient because their source of vit D is Mum – who may also be deficient!
Vitamin D is involved in regulating over 1000 genes. The bowel needs Vitamin D to absorb minerals like magnesium, calcium and others. Most of our happy hormone serotonin is made in the healthy gut and then there are all the other hormones that need minerals to be made: sex hormones, adrenal and thyroid hormones and insulin which regulate blood sugar levels. Vitamin D may also reduce or prevent the kidney damage in those who already have diabetes.
Winter and spring are the times when you are even more likely deficient as it is virtually impossible to get the amount needed from the sun. Sunshine during the summer months between 10am to 4pm – make sure you do not burn, but getting some direct sun.
While sun is the main form of vitamin D you can get small amounts in the following foods: sardines, salmon, egg yolks and liver, oysters, sunflower seeds, butter and cream, Cod liver is very rich in Vit D and A.
