A natural fiber complex reduces body weight in the overweight and obese

Summary: 123 Overweight and obese adults were advised on physical activity and nutrition, including a lower calorie diet. (30% energy from fat and 500 kcal deficit/day), One group also received 12 weeks of a natural fibre complex  3 g/day and the other group received a placebo.

Compared with placebo, the natural fibre complex was associated with a significantly greater  body weight loss (3.8 vs. 1.4kg; p<0.001), and significantly more participants losing ≥5% of their  body weight and significantly greater reductions in BMI, bodyfat composition and waist circumference. The natural fibre complex was well tolerated with side effects were reported.

Comment:  The difference was clinically meaningful and the product well tolerated.  We always say “It all starts in the gut!” Whilst there many causes of weight loss the need for fibre is easy to assess. Eat a food like corn which can often be identified in the stool and see how long it takes to come through the other end. It really should be around the 12 hour mark.
